Discovery Education and leading corporate and community partners are offering engaging, no-cost digital learning resources to students, teachers, and families to support  Human Rights Day observances. Held annually on December 10th, Human Rights Day commemorates the date on which the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, effectively outlining human rights for the first time globally. In recognition of the 2020 theme – Recover Better: Stand Up for Human Rights – Discovery Education and its diverse network of corporate and community partners present a host of digital resources designed to immerse students and families in the past, present, and future of social justice and equity. Among the curated resources exploring fundamental human rights principles and encouraging students worldwide to create a brighter tomorrow are:
Interactive Human Rights Defenders Map
Speak Truth to Power is an educational program created in partnership between Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and Discovery Education empowering youth to defend human rights through no-cost digital resources for the anywhere classroom. With the Human Rights Defenders Map, students can travel the globe to hear from courageous individuals about how they are working to fight systemic injustice for the betterment of humanity.
Classroom and Family Activities
Unlock the power of testimony to counter hate with Teaching with Testimony, a program from USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education that uses eyewitness accounts from survivors and witnesses of genocide to empower students to find they voices and take action for a better future. Engage the classroom and home alike with “The Promise” Classroom & Family Activities that guide students through the “us vs. them” mentality that fueled the Armenian Genocide from 1915-1923.
Family Activities
Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School & Life, powered by Wings for Kids and The Allstate Foundation, incorporate academics and fun while building social and emotional skills. Families can work together to build social and emotional learning skills with “In Your Shoes” Family Activity by sharing and learning how everyone has been affected by the unprecedented challenges of 2020.
Social & Emotional Learning Topic Videos
The Discover Your Happy program from LG and Discovery Education equips communities with the skills necessary to reduce stress and create Sustainable Happiness by providing curriculum and standards aligned resources. Kick off thoughtful conversations with the 6 Sustainable Happiness Skills Topic Videos which equips students with science-based skills to develop emotional wellness and resiliency in school and beyond.
Virtual Field Trip
During the 30-minute Tech for Tomorrow experience, go behind-the-scenes at The Tech’s family-friendly science and technology center in the heart of downtown San Jose and met a diverse group of individuals who are using data to change the world for the better. Discover how the 2020 Tech for Global Good Laureates use STEM to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. Through their stories, students are motivated to become problem-solvers in their own area by applying their natural curiosity to create innovative solutions.
“Keeping students connected to the real-world with relevant content means their natural curiosity is supported, no matter where learning is taking place,” said Andrea Lance, Learning Environment and Instructional Resource Coordinator. “Teachers need flexible, curated, digital resources to bring human rights into the lessons to spark thought-provoking conversations and drive action. Resources that don’t just prepare them for the world that exists, but equips them with the skills and tools necessary to change the world.”
